There are people at Stanford University closing in on zero waste heat reactors, intrinsic safety is a closer reality thanks to many technological advances in France and Japan and there probably is no future where nuclear doesn’t account for a substantial percentage of our electric. The good is that in 40 years the breakthroughs and improvements have made many of these issues less fearsome and less problematic. The humanitarian, environmental and economic toll can be horrible. Most frightening of all - one accident can be devastating. Nowhere near a gas or coal plant but they do emit. Maybe not.Ģ,000 metric tons of radioactive wate a year (I think that’s a 1990 number) waste heat that gets cooled by ground water (not great environmentally) and yes there are emissions at a nuclear plant.

Zero carbon emissions so it’s classified as a carbon free electric source and people can count that electric as “green”. Probably because nuclear is now considered green power. Now the government is handing them a 6 BILLION dollar gift. They were charging for the power, transmission and surcharges for everything under the sun. From what I can tell none of these electric providers were sending those KW’s to us for free.
